In the Show Blue Bloods Why Did They Keep Calling Gormley Arg After He Was Promoted Lieutenant

Sidney "Sid" Gormley is a Lieutenant in the New York City Police Department. He serves as the Special Assistant to the Commissioner. As Special Assistant to the Commissioner, he serves as an advisor to Commissioner Reagan and as the de facto Chief of Department. Gormley assists Commissioner Reagan in communicating to the rank-and-file, and serves as Commissioner Reagan's enforcer of the NYPD Patrol Guide. Gormley serves alongside Deputy Commissioner Moore and Detective Baker as part of Commissioner Reagan's inner advisory circle.

Biography

Gormley was a Detective Sergeant and the supervisor of the 54th Precinct's Detective Squad. As the supervisor of the 54th Precinct Detective Squad, he was Detective Reagan's immediate boss. He was frequently exasperated by his subordinate.

Gormley lives in New Hyde Park with his wife, Sheila, his son Brendan and daughter. According to the certificate in his office, he is a graduate of New York University. In Flags of Our Fathers, Gormley mentions he is a veteran, and he lost a grandfather and two uncles in the service.

In season five, Gormley is reassigned by Commissioner Reagan to One Police Plaza. He is appointed as the de facto Chief of Department after Dino Arbogast resigned. However, due to Gormley not being a Captain or higher to be appointed Chief of Department, he is given the title "Special Assistant to the Commissioner," giving him the authority of the Chief of Department, minus the pay grade and privileges. In this capacity, Gormley acts as Commissioner Reagan's liaison to the rank and file. Gormley is later promoted to Lieutenant.
